– If you haven’t checked in with Rochester’s falcons in a while, there’s a lot of news. You might recall, the Kodak Tower renovation forced their relocation to the Times Square Building. Since then, Mariah was ousted by Beauty who was ousted by Unity, who happens to be Beauty’s niece. Archer, Mariah’s grandson, had been courting both Beauty and Unity. But it looks like Unity won. Beauty was found injured on the ground at Xerox Tower last week. She’s recovering with DEC and the FalconWatch group awaits word on her condition.

– Are the Finger Lakes getting saturated with wineries? Officials say the number of wineries is increasing dramatically, but the number of tourists is not.

– There’s a cult outside Albany. The Times Union investigates a man being compared to David Koresh.

– One of the first black college quarterbacks played for Syracuse University. He was often benched because of his race.

– Monroe County’s suburban towns have a collective 1,349 employees. Only 35 of them are minorities.

  1. Beauty was brought into Eastridge Animal Hospital where I work. I got to help a little, holding her while Penny and Bruce took care of her. She got a lot of her fire back just getting cleaned up (which Penny tells me is a huge deal for the birds.) I’m a noob so I can’t take any credit, but Doc B and everyone else there is great and its amazing how much of his own time and expense is put into caring for these animals. Hopefully she will pull through. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Can you tell us the extent of the injuries that you saw?

    • I’m not an expert, really I just clean the aviaries and feed the birds for now until they can get me properly trained and licensed. They *looked* bad to me but I was told they looked a lot worse then they were. She was pretty beat up though. One of the women I don’t know yet who works there follows the falcons and was pretty overwrought by seeing Beauty there.

I liked your blog before, Rachel, but since you are a falcon follower…and you seem to know your stuff…it’s even better! We are all holding our collective breath until Monday and hopefully will hear good news about our Beauty. It’s been a tough year for Rochester falcons.

    Thanks for the info, Christine.

  5. OK, according to the people I work with, because Peregrines are protected I am very limited as to what I can say. I can tell you she is doing well, which I am sure is what most of you wanted to know anyway. We cannot give out specifics and I was told you could try to call the DEC (though I don’t know how much they will tell you.)
